A smart strategy for your IT expenses

Some time ago, I was talking with the CEO of a company about his IT infrastructure on-premises and the cost to maintain it. He told me: "if you have a better idea that can allow me to save money, you are welcome". With my consultant, the company moved to a hybrid cloud architecture, and after a positive experience, they further moved business processes to third-party platforms and enjoyed the benefits.

When someone asks me how to modernize their IT landscape, I always start from the as-is assessment. Furthermore, I suggest considering IT as part of their business strategy. In addition, I recommend thinking about what level of collaboration they need because you can find many applications based on web technologies. For instance, we can look at Office365 or Google Workspace.

Hence, starting with the needs for services:

  • Communication
  • Storage
  • Access control and user device management
  • Security including disaster recovery measures, firewall, antivirus
  • Hosting including online shopping
  • Collaboration including email, content creation and sharing
  • Business SW like ERP, CRM
  • DevOps platform
That bring the strategy for costs based on OPEX and IT architecture based on XaaS that result in:
  • Reducing risks dramatically because Microsoft or Google invest surely more than an SME in security and safety;
  •  Lowering the investment in IT:
    • Remove disaster recovery measures on-premises (e.g., back up with multiple HW instances, UPS, ..)
    • Cuts infrastructure costs (e.g., space, servers and server rack, cabling, .. )
    • Cuts man/hours costs in IT maintenance (e.g., SW update, .. )
    • Cuts end-user HW costs (all you need is a terminal and a connection)
In addition, a cloud-based setup can easily allow you to manage teams spread over several sites.

A smart IT strategy allows you to stay flexible enhance collaboration and have tight control of your IT expenses.
